Client: Museum of London
The Objective
To develop carbon baseline and carbon reduction targets for a leading London visitor attraction spanning three key sites.
Case Study
3ADAPT have recently developed a comprehensive and detailed carbon footprint assessment for the MoL, to provide a baseline from which future targets and decarbonisation strategies can be considered. The baseline assessment covered Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions across three operational sites, one of which closed to the public during the baseline year and another which was in construction during the baseline year. This required an in-depth understanding of the museum’s operations during the assessed year and engagement with key stakeholders to support this.
Scope 3 included quantification of emissions across retail, catering, purchases and travel (business, object, employee commuting and visitor travel) using a number of large datasets of varying quality. This was achieved through close collaboration with stakeholders across the organisation during one-to-one sessions and interactive workshops.
The project also involved exploration of carbon reduction targets for the MoL in alignment with the principles of the Science Based Targets initiative. Recommendations on appropriate target dates and methodologies were provided with consideration given to the targets of key MoL stakeholders, funders and sector peers as well as the international, national and local context. In addition, the recommended targets also took account of the MoL’s unique opportunities and constraints identified throughout the project, such as the construction of the new museum and the impact of projected decarbonisation across relevant sectors and infrastructure within London.
Building on the comprehensive carbon baseline and net zero targets, the next stage of 3ADAPT’s work with the MoL will involve the development of a decarbonisation strategy across all assets and operations, incorporating actions that can be implemented by the MoL as well as modelling the external decarbonisation of relevant industries.
