Tullie House Sustainability Strategy Case Study

Client: Tullie

Objective

To develope a robust and holistic Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan.

Case Study

3ADAPT have supported Tullie House to develop a Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan. This piece of work came at a crucial time in the museum’s refurbishment and extension and during Tullie’s submission to The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF).

3ADAPT reviewed Tullie’s existing Environmental Strategy and Action Plan and provided an assessment of the level of maturity of this alongside the maturity of other organisations in the cultural sector. Reviewing Tullie’s existing internal reports and strategies enabled opportunities for closing gaps to be highlighted. This included conducting a best practice review of other organisations sustainability strategies across the cultural sector. This review was structured using themes from the Integrated Reporting Framework and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and resulted in ranking the organisation’s maturity against elements from these standards.

Following this review, 3ADAPT conducted a workshop to engage key internal stakeholders across all departments at Tullie to better understand what sustainability opportunities exist for the organisation and how these can be turned into tangible actions. The workshop enabled teams to understand what Tullie had achieved so far, areas of actionable opportunity and specific challenges with progressing sustainability.

3ADAPT compiled Tullie’s existing actions with actions proposed during the workshop supplemented with suggested actions from our sector best practice review into Tullie’s updated Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan. The strategy was organised into seven key themes: Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Energy, Water, Waste, Procurement Process, Biodiversity, Training and Education.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust appointed and worked with 3ADAPT to develop an Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Throughout the process, 3ADAPT provided valuable guidance, insight, knowledge and support, engaging with team members, leaders and trustees to deliver a strategy and detailed action plan. These working documents are specific to Tullie and give a real framework for our future practice, in line with ongoing developments.

Within each theme, the strategy explores opportunities and challenges, what Tullie has achieved so far, what areas are currently being prioritised and what recommended or planned activities are needed going forward. Existing governance structures for overseeing the strategy and action plan implementation were mapped and processes to take action forward and review were outlined.

The action plan identified c.60 actions to meet the objectives of the strategy. To support implementation, actions were assigned owners, deadlines, and specific metrics to track progress. This structure will enable Tullie to regularly review and report on its progress towards meeting its sustainability objectives.

The Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan formed a key part of Tullie’s submission for NLHF funding and was the first such complete strategy and action plan developed for the organisation.
